NE Lantau

NE Lantau ( 大 嶼 山 東 北 )

Not until the commissioning of North Lantau Expressway, the northeast coast of Lantau Island was out of vehicular access. Thanks to the expressway and service roads like Cheung Tung Road ( 翔 東 路 ), we have more nice places for joy riding.

Access?
Public Transport very limited
Self drive Follow Cheung Tung Road and then Ta Pang Po access road or Sham Shui Kok Road as appropriate.

Tai Ho Wan

↑ Tai Ho Wan ( 大 蠔 灣 ) used to be a bay. Instead of reclaimed (like adjacent Siu Ho Wan ( 小 蠔 灣 )), the expressway and railway were built on an hollow embankment which allows tidal flow. As a result, the bay remains intact.

grassland

↑ The grassland on the embankment, near to the access road leading to towngas regulation station.

深水角

↑ ↓ Sham Shui Kok ( 深 水 角 ), accessible by Sham Shui Kok Road, which stems from Cheung Tung Road and burrows under the expressway and railway.
深水角

airport express

↑ The Airport Express is right next to the service road.

Cheung Tung Road stretchs between Tung Chung and Penny Bay. South bound from Penny Bay after passing Yam O ( 陰 澳 ), there is a passing-bay on the left. It is where the Ta Pang Po access road stems from Cheung Tung Road to Yam O.

打棚埔下行道

↑ Ta Pang Po access road, very likely overlook.

打棚埔下行道

↑ Tunnel on one side and big tubes the other side.

Right turn to Yam O.

陰澳通道

↑ Cliff on one side and railway the other side.
陰澳通道

陰澳

↑ Finally arrived Yam O, which was the only raw logs stacking place in Hong Kong.
陰澳

According to traditional Chinese geography, the sun only hangs on the southern sky at temperate mainland. Hence, the northern face of a mountain / ridge would not be direct hit by sunlight. Hence, this face is known as Yin (in Putonghua) / Yam (in local dialect), which is literally "shadow". Hence, the place name "Yam O" simply implies a bay north of a mountain.

You may aware that the Hong Kong Disneyland has been built nearby. The MTR adopted the name "Sunny Bay" instead. The original name might fade off eventually.

Sunny Bay PTI

↑ The under utilised Sunny Bay Public Transport Interchange, and the Yam O service road.
↓ MTR train from Ng Kwu Ling Tunnel, where the service road ends.
五鼓嶺

東涌綫
