![]() ↑ Tai Ho Wan ( 大 蠔 灣 ) used to be a bay. Instead of reclaimed (like adjacent Siu Ho Wan ( 小 蠔 灣 )), the expressway and railway were built on an hollow embankment which allows tidal flow. As a result, the bay remains intact. |
![]() ↑ The grassland on the embankment, near to the access road leading to towngas regulation station. |
![]() ↑ ↓ Sham Shui Kok ( 深 水 角 ), accessible by Sham Shui Kok Road, which stems from Cheung Tung Road and burrows under the expressway and railway. ![]() |
![]() ↑ The Airport Express is right next to the service road. |
Cheung Tung Road stretchs between Tung Chung and Penny Bay. South bound from Penny Bay after passing Yam O ( 陰 澳 ), there is a passing-bay on the left. It is where the Ta Pang Po access road stems from Cheung Tung Road to Yam O.
![]() ↑ Ta Pang Po access road, very likely overlook. |
![]() ↑ Tunnel on one side and big tubes the other side. |
![]() ↑ Sea-side end of the tunnel. |
Right turn to Yam O.
![]() ↑ Cliff on one side and railway the other side. ![]() |
![]() ↑ Finally arrived Yam O, which was the only raw logs stacking place in Hong Kong. ![]() |
According to traditional Chinese geography, the sun only hangs on the southern sky at temperate mainland. Hence, the northern face of a mountain / ridge would not be direct hit by sunlight. Hence, this face is known as Yin (in Putonghua) / Yam (in local dialect), which is literally "shadow". Hence, the place name "Yam O" simply implies a bay north of a mountain.
You may aware that the Hong Kong Disneyland has been built nearby. The MTR adopted the name "Sunny Bay" instead. The original name might fade off eventually.
![]() ↑ The under utilised Sunny Bay Public Transport Interchange, and the Yam O service road. ↓ MTR train from Ng Kwu Ling Tunnel, where the service road ends. ![]() |
![]() ↑ MTR Train. |
