Cruising Hong Kong
High Island & Rocky Harbour

High Island ( 糧 船 灣 )

The High Island was once the third largest island in Hong Kong. However, upon the building of High Island Reservoir ( 萬 宜 水 庫 ) in late 1970's, the two ends of the island joined with the Sai Kung Peninsular by two dams. High Island has been no longer qualified as an island.

The story starts in geology lesson. Since the end of the last ice age (about 8000 years ago), large ice sheets at temperate region started to melt. sea level started to rise (for about 200 meters) and advanced shoreward. As a result, coastal low land and plains were flooded. Only mountains withstand and form the present Hong Kong rugged landscape. The evidences can still be seen at the rugged coast of Sai Kung.

This excursion started at Sai Kung Pier.
